Energy Initiative
Becoming Carbon Neutral
Climate change is perhaps one of the greatest challenges facing the world today. As part of News Corporation, we are committed to addressing our impact on the environment and reducing our energy use and carbon emissions. Our goal is carbon neutrality, or zero carbon emissions, by the year 2010. As of April 2010, we are on track to achieve that goal.
Carbon Footprint Analysis
News Corporation began its efforts to reduce carbon emissions by conducting a Carbon Footprint Analysis for each business unit. In FY’09, News America Marketing’s carbon footprint totaled 4, 895 tons. We are proud to be able to say that News America Marketing reduced our carbon footprint by 23% from fiscal year 2006 to fiscal year 2009.
Strategy
News Corporation has laid out a strategy for achieving carbon neutrality. That strategy includes three parts:
Step 1: Reducing our energy use
Step 2: Using renewable energy sources whenever possible
Step 3: Offsetting unavoidable emissions
Initiatives
We have implemented the following energy-saving measures:
- Using sustainable elements including lighting and HVAC equipment in new construction and renovation projects
- Using furniture fixtures and finishes that incorporate sustainable products
- Making new furniture purchases through Haworth Inc., a company committed to being globally sustainable
- Contracting with Flooring Resources Corporation to recycle unwanted carpet during office renovation projects; Flooring Resources is committed to the recycling effort, promoting green business practices and preservation of the environment and in 2010, they were awarded the Ecollect Award by ReSource Commercial Flooring Network, LLC.
- Donating or reusing existing furniture whenever possible
- Converting some color printers in our sales offices to solid ink technology available through Xerox ColorQube 9200 which is cartridge free, emits 90% less waste and is 2009 Energy Star qualified
- Investing in design alteration and manufacturing capabilities to allow for component interchangeability on select hardware items; the new processes allow for subassembly component replacement of certain hardware in the Field; this hardware would have otherwise been discarded and replaced in full thereby substantially reducing plastic consumption and freight requirements
- Over 90% of our print facilities are FSC, SFI and/or PEFC certified
- Our primary printer for in-store advertisements, Angstrom, is SFI certified; Angstrom is also a certified Chain of Custody FSC printer
- Our clients have the option to use special-ordered FSC approved paper
- All News America Marketing sheet-fed print materials are printed using soy-based inks, which are naturally low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
- In 2008, satellite video conferencing equipment was installed in our New York, Wilton, Chicago and Los Angeles offices; meetings are now conducted remotely, minimizing the amount of travel between these offices
- The second annual SmartSource Green issue of SmartSource Magazine ran almost entirely on FSC-certified paper; over 69 million households received inserts carrying the FSC logo
- Creating a retailer-specific shelf clip to support our flex-merchandising P.O.S. placement programs; the new clip reduces the need for the on-going purchasing, shipping and disposal of shelf clips
- Improving management of our Field automobile fleet, implementing routing software and redesigning managed merchandising programs to reduce emissions and fuel
- Changing materials for several of our In-Store programs from vinyl to recyclable cardboard
- Moving to a frameless Shelftalk unit which uses less plastic hardware than our original Shelftalk, which used a red plastic frame
- Placing recycling bins in every cube and office
Engaging Our Employees
For the 40th anniversary of Earth Week, we encouraged employees in our 12 offices to participate in a company-wide push to reduce, reuse and recycle
- As part of Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program, collected worn-out athletic shoes that are turned into basketball and tennis courts, running tracks, soccer fields, fitness flooring and playground safety surfacing
- Donated old wireless phones to provide assistance with the ongoing disaster relief in Haiti
- Collected gently used, clean work wear for Career Gear (Men) and Dress for Success (Women); awarded the 2010 WorkPlace Company Partner of the Year Award as a result of our donations to Dress for Success
- Recycled old batteries and Compact Florescent Light Bulbs (CFL)through Universal Waste Recycling
- Collected used computer equipment to be repurposed
- Supported bike-to-work initiatives
- Participated in city park clean up events
